Pi Day

March 14th is Pi Day, in celebration of the mathematically irrational ratio that starts with 3.14. For science geeks (who are going to die anyway) there are June 2nd and October 23rd, tandem dates for celebrating Avogadro's Number (6.02x10^23rd).

Anyway, some students in the Pittsburgh area got to celebrate a little and hopefully learn a little, too. At my school, I brought in an apple pie for the staff lounge.

Darren -
We had a Pi day celebration at my school (Seton Hill University outside Pittsburgh) also - a little late (the 22nd - 22/7 as an approximation?) - we had a "Pie your teachers event. We've done this for four years now and we keep rasing money. Several administrators participated and we even got the University president to commit to taking a pie next year!

I got the Pittsburgh link from a maillist of which I'm a member. Members of that list were mostly of the "waste of time", "no educational value" camp. There's nothing wrong with having a little fun at school, and some folks probably learned some things.

As I see it, this kind of stuff is better than pep rallies.

My company's CEO/founder was a math major as an undergraduate, and we all are supplied with a piece of pie at 1:59 p.m. on 3/14.
